Your data

Documents/Tentaku — plain folders and files. Back it up like anything else; nothing is locked in.

Privacy

Recording and transcription happen on this computer. Only the text you send to the AI you chose ever leaves it. Keys and feed links are stored encrypted on this computer — the encryption key lives in your operating system's keychain, and each stored item is tied to its own name so one can't be swapped for another. Licensing facts (when your trial started, which codes this computer used, the recording count for Free) are kept in one small encrypted file: on Mac ~/Library/Application Support/Tentaku/state.enc, on Windows %APPDATA%\Tentaku\state.enc — no lecture content. Redeeming a code sends just that code's id and label to tentaku.app so its uses can be counted — right away when online, otherwise the next time you are, with when you redeemed it. A paid key is checked with the license service at launch and about weekly; the seat's label is a random id made for this install (like tentaku-3f9a0c1e), never your computer's name. Check for updates (only when you press it) downloads tentaku.app/versions.json.

Where the operating system has no keychain, keys are kept unencrypted — see the full list of what leaves your computer.

The folder, file by file

Documents/Tentaku/
config.json settings + encrypted keys and feed links
  deadlines.json from your calendar feed
inbox.json file names spotted in Downloads
  classes/<class>/
    meta.json cards.json concepts.json plan.json tests.json sites.json coursenotes.md
files/<category>/ documents you dropped or fetched
    lessons/ visuals/ digests/
    sessions/<date-time>/
      audio-00001.wav … transcript.txt notes.md notes-original.md highlights.json

Audio is about 115 MB per hour of lecture and is kept until you delete it. Exports (Anki file, calendar .ics, PDFs, class packs, backups, the Claude connector) go to your Downloads folder.

Removing all of Tentaku's data

First free your Pro seat: Settings → License → Apply with an empty box. Then quit Tentaku and delete: the Documents/Tentaku folder (notes, recordings, settings); the Tentaku folder in ~/Library/Application Support on Mac or %APPDATA% on Windows (it holds state.enc); and on Mac the “Tentaku Safe Storage” item in Keychain Access. Last, delete the app itself.
