Tentaku the octopus, looking smug

Features

Record in class, and walk out with notes, flashcards, practice tests and a plan — built by your own AI, with audio that never leaves your laptop. Free covers one class with every feature.

In class

  • One-button recording

No bots, no meeting links, works in any lecture hall.

  • Live notes while you listen

Grounded only in what was actually said, refreshed every few minutes, with a live transcript that keeps up with the room.

  • Highlight

One tap flags what the professor just said; it gets its own spot in your notes. Flag one from any app with ⌘⇧H (Ctrl+Shift+H on Windows).

  • Catch me up

Zoned out? Three bullets on the last five minutes, instantly.

  • Break button

Pause for the 10-minute break: the microphone turns fully off, and Resume continues the same lecture.

  • Crash-proof

Audio is saved in 10-second pieces; a dead battery costs you at most 10 seconds, and recovery rebuilds the notes.

  • Announcement radar

“Due Friday,” “exam covers…,” room changes — caught and quoted in your notes.

  • Menu-bar octopus

Record, stop and highlight without opening the window. Mic pre-check before class.

After class

  • Instant brief on Stop

Notes open before you’ve packed your bag. ✨ Day brief on multi-lecture days.

  • Flashcards from anything

Your notes, the textbook, the slides, any PDF; edit any card, skip any card.

  • Spaced review

    Cards come back right before you’d forget (1 → 3 → 7 → 14 → 30 days).

  • Exam mode

Review only what your professor actually tests.

  • Practice tests in your professor’s style

Built from their real problem sets and past exams; anything you miss becomes a flashcard automatically.

  • Concept map

A visual map of the course: foundations on top, arrows to what builds on them, colored by how strong you are on each. Hover to trace any concept’s chain.

  • Exam scope

Pick your next exam and the map lights up the concepts it needs, then teaches you the next one you’re not strong on yet.

  • Analyze a class

Point it at the syllabus, slides and past tests: topics ranked by weight, how your professor asks questions, and what’s most likely to be tested. Then build practice from it, if you ask.

  • Teach me from the ground up

Click any concept and get a lesson that starts at its prerequisites.

  • Weekly coach

A this-week plan built from the syllabus, your real deadlines, and your weak cards.

  • Ask your lectures anything

“When does SN1 beat SN2?”, “list every formula from Calc II this week”, “what’s likely on the exam.” Select any text → 💬 Ask / 📖 Explain / 🃏 Card it. Answers stream in as they’re written.

  • Show me

AI-drawn visuals on tests, lessons and answers.

  • Tidy notes

Cleans up any lecture’s notes; the original is always kept.

  • Import recordings (Mac)

Professor posted the lecture recording? Drop it in, get full notes.

Your AI, your choice

  • Bring your own AI

One-click OpenRouter, or an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google. Balanced is quick and inexpensive; Best uses a stronger model for lessons, drawings, Analyze and practice tests.

  • Ask in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini

No key? Tentaku shows exactly what it will copy, lets you edit it, puts it on the clipboard and opens the AI app you already use. You paste and press send yourself.

  • Useful with no AI at all

Recording, on-device transcripts, search, highlights, your own flashcards (+ New card) and every export work without connecting anything. AI buttons just say “Connect an AI to use this”.

Organized for you

  • A hub per class

Lectures, documents, search, all in one page.

  • Drop anything, it sorts itself

Tentaku reads the file and files it: Homework, Syllabus, Tests, Slides, Readings (and you can always move it).

  • Built-in textbook viewer

Jump to any page or chapter; ask it “summarize pages 120–130” or “help me with problem 3”.

  • Downloads auto-filing (opt-in)

Off until you say yes. When on, course documents you download are filed into the right class by name, with an ↩ undo. Nothing leaves your computer.

  • Search every lecture

One box searches all transcripts and notes in a class.

  • Class packs (Mac)

Share a class — notes, transcripts, documents, cards, map, plan, tests — with a classmate as one file; your audio never travels.

  • Back up everything (Mac)

One click zips your whole Documents/Tentaku folder.

Connected to your school

  • Any school calendar

Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Brightspace deadlines through the read-only calendar-feed link. No login, no password.

  • Professor’s course sites

Tentaku checks it for new PDFs and lists them on the class page with a ⤓ Get button.

  • Deadline check-off

Done is done; checked items leave your plan.

  • Phone calendar export

Your deadlines as a file Google or Apple Calendar imports. Flashcards export to Anki.

  • Use Tentaku inside your AI apps

Add Tentaku’s connector to the Claude desktop app, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code or LM Studio and ask about your lectures there. Tentaku’s connector reads your notes, can add cards and notes, and never edits or deletes.

  • Badges and a mascot

10 achievement badges, and a Buddy or Scholar octopus to match your mood.

Private by architecture

  • Audio never leaves your laptop. Recording and transcription happen on your machine, offline.
  • Bring your own AI. One-click OpenRouter sign-in, or an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google (pay-as-you-go, usually cents per lecture, separate from any ChatGPT Plus / Claude Pro subscription). Tentaku never meters, marks up, or resells AI.
  • Keys are encrypted on your computer. Tentaku stores them scrambled with a key your operating system’s keychain protects, inside Documents/Tentaku.
  • Your data is yours. Plain files in Documents/Tentaku; export, back up, or walk away anytime. No lock-in, ever.
  • Never records on its own. You press the button, every time.
